New look Phibsboro is now on show

Northsiders can finally have their say on the long-awaited draft plan for the future of Phibsboro and Mountjoy Prison.
The Local Area Plan (LAP) and an environmental report are currently on public display at two locations in the city.
The consultation process on the landmark redevelopment of the Dublin 7 area will continue until April 22.
A lengthy consultation process on the initial draft has been ongoing since 2006.
According to the report, the regeneration aims to tap into the true spirit of the Dublin 7 area.
“The plan is an opportunity to unlock the potential of Phibsboro/Mountjoy as a quality urban neighbourhood; to facilitate positive social, economic and environmental change; to support the provision of quality of services, amenities and infrastructure; and to provide a focus for established and emerging communities within the area,” it was stated.

It is envisaged that the future Phibsboro and Mountjoy will be a “safe, visually attractive, socially vibrant and architecturally stimulating public realm with a permeable and well defined hierarchy of public and private open spaces.”
Phibsboro itself will be transformed into an attractive, modern and family-friendly hub with a new civic plaza, a host of cafes and restaurants and a new community and recreation centre with outdoor and indoor playing spaces.
Dalymount Park and Phibsboro Shopping Centre will also be regenerated for mixed-use development.
The LAP also includes the improvement of public transport through the development of Metro North, the reopening of the disused Broadstone garage for the proposed Luas and improved cycling and walking amenities in the area.
The Mater Hospital and Mountjoy are also among the key sites for redevelopment contained within the plan.
It is proposed that a new route through the hospital site will be created to allow for access from Eccles Street to the North Circular Road.
Undesirable building clutter around the original Mater building will also be removed.
According to the plan, the redevelopment of the site will also include the provision of the Mater Metro stop.
The regeneration of the site will also include the provision of an “appropriate quantum of floor space” to facilitate the development of the hospital as a “world class medical institute”.
Meanwhile, Mountjoy Prison will be transformed into a core for housing, entertainment and recreation amenities once all prisoners are relocated to the Thornton Hall ‘superprison’ in 2011.
The Local Area Plan contains proposals for the creation of family orientated mixed-use housing, a public museum, a new community school and library facility and a substantial water feature adjacent to the Royal Canal.
The proposed draft is available for viewing at the Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8 between 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
The plans are also on display in Phibsboro Library, Blackquire Bridge, North Circular Road.
