A ONE-WAY system which has caused traffic chaos and congestion in Dublin 15 for several years will return to two-way traffic at the end of the month.
The traffic restrictions on the Clonsilla Road led to continuous traffic backlogs on the Snughborough Road, which caused havoc for motorists trying to get to and from Clonsilla and Blanchardstown.
Much sought-after works to return the road to two-way traffic along the stretch from St Mochta’s Estate to the roundabout at the Diswellstown Road got underway on June 18 and it’s hoped that the road will open to two-way traffic at the end of July.
A spokesperson for Fingal County Council said the move to reopen the road to two-way traffic was warmly welcomed by the wider community.
“Re-opening this stretch of road to two-way traffic was considered to be an option to ease traffic flow on the Clonsilla Road, and for general traffic management,” she told Northside People.
“When this proposal went on public display it received widespread support from local residents and road users.”
Local councillor David McGuinness (FF) described the move to reopen the road to two-way traffic as “an important milestone for the people of Clonsilla”.
“This is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of the people of Blanchardstown and Clonsilla.”
Cllr Patrick Nulty (Lab) said: “the news is welcome to hard-pressed commuters who have campaigned long and hard for this issue to be resolved.”
Dublin West Sinn Fein representative, Paul Donnelly, explained how the one-way system was a “nightmare” for the large number of motorists who travel through the area each week.
“I am very pleased for those residents who have had to endure a nightmare of endless traffic jams whilst either trying to access schools, shops, business etc in Coolmine and Blanchardstown,” he said.
“It was vital that these road works have commenced and I strongly welcome them.
It has been a long journey of motion after motion for all public representatives over the past number of years to get this road re-opened.
“Switching to the two-way system will have an impact on those who live along the Clonsilla road. However I don’t believe the impact will be severe”.
Mr Donnelly went on to outline his concern in relation to Snughborough Road.
“It was proposed that the section from the roundabout at Blanchardstown Road South to the fire station road would be changed as this is a huge bottleneck,” he explained.
“I am very concerned that no provision has been made this year for the commencement of the proposed works.”
