Mulhuddart is set to become the home of IBM’s new European hub, which will focus on a new concept called ‘Cloud computing’.
The new hub is to be located at the IBM innovation centre and is expected to create 21 new jobs.
Experts will work at the centre providing research and services to satellite facilities in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Speaking at the announcement, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin TD, praised IBM’s commitment to the Irish market.
“The selection of Ireland as the location for IBM's European hub for Cloud computing highlights the country’s role as an important contributor to IBM's global research, development and innovation strategy,” he stated.
“The investment further establishes IBM Ireland’s growing reputation as a high performance computing centre within IBM Corporation.”
The centre is being built with the help of IDA Ireland who have a longstanding relationship with IBM in Ireland.
Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive with IBM, explained the importance of such an information hub to the Irish market.
“Our investments in Cloud computing are a prime example of how IBM is seeking out emerging global market opportunities and new computing models that benefit IBM clients," he said.
"Through this new facility and the Cloud computing model, the wealth of talent at IBM's software lab in Ireland will be accessible to not only the rest of Europe, but Africa and the Middle East as well."
Training for Cloud computing lecturers at the Dublin Institute of Technology’s school of computing will be provided to allow the school to keep up with the emerging market.
