DUBLIN City Council has published an environmental plan for Dollymount Beach to ensure that standards laid out in the Blue Flag Programme are continually met by the important amenity.
The plan is divided into two sections - one to apply to the bathing season from June 1 to August 31, and the other for the remainder of the year.
It deals largely with the removal of litter from the beach and sets out a schedule for the regular mechanical raking of the sand; the supply and emptying of litter bins; and pledges co-operation with local voluntary bodies and regular contact with Waste Management Services to ensure all fly-tipping of large items is dealt with efficiently.
Dublin North Central TD and Minister of State, Seán Haughey, said Dollymount is a very significant asset to Dublin city.
“I am glad the city council has initiated this plan with the aim of securing a Blue Flag on an annual basis,” stated Minister Haughey.
“It is a great source of pride to have a Blue Flag in the centre of a capital city.”
“This is a firm and comprehensive agenda and I very much hope that it is adhered to.
“If it is, I believe it will make a tremendous difference to the environmental standards of the area.”
Meanwhile, Minister Haughey is urging visitors to the beach to ensure that they dispose of their litter properly.
“There is no excuse now with 50 200-litre bins being provided,” he added.
“In the past, there have been problems with the bins being overloaded but the city council has now stated its intention to empty the bins on a daily basis during the busy summer months.
“This must be a mutual effort and if everybody plays their part, I am confident that we will have that Blue Flag back again soon.”
