AS the 2008 Trocaire Lenten Campaign ended last weekend and coincided with World Water Day (March 22), a Northside woman used the occasion to highlight the world’s water shortage.
Eimear Kellett, from Howth, who works for Trocaire, said that worldwide 700 million people do not have access to enough water.
“Climate change is a contributing factor to the world water shortage, as poor communities are struggling to cope with drought and flooding caused by extreme, unpredictable weather,” stated Eimear.
“Living in Howth, it is very difficult to imagine the uncertainty of life in tropical areas where it is not a case of when rain will fall, but if rain will fall.
“In East Africa alone, more then 20 million people were affected by drought in 2005.
“Traditional rainy seasons are becoming less predictable and farmlands are becoming baked and eroded.
“The shift in weather patterns is extremely concerning for millions of people who rely solely on agriculture for their living.”
Eimear said Trocaire is helping people to cope with the effects of climate change by providing agricultural training and developing water programmes for poor rural communities.
“We are also helping people to prepare for natural disasters like flooding, drought and landslides before they occur,” she stated.
“Trocaire would like to thank the people of North East Dublin for taking part in our Lenten campaign again this year.
“The support and encouragement we receive from schools, parishes and people throughout the area each year is invaluable and makes a huge difference to our work in building long-term solutions to poverty overseas.
“We ask anyone who has a Trocaire box to kindly return it to their local parish or send your contribution to Trocaire,” added Eimear.
Trocaire boxes can be returned to any Catholic church around the country.
To make a contribution by post, send cheques or money orders to Trocaire, Maynooth,  County Kildare.
