A Northside community project recently celebrated its fifth year of working with and helping young locals in Mulhuddart.
The Mulhuddart Community Youth Project marked the occasion with the publication of its ‘youth@thecentre’ booklet.
Among those present at the launch were Minister with Special Responsibility for Drugs, Pat Carey (FF), and Ray Devlin, assistant director of Foróige.
The community project helps over 400 local children between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age.
Niamh Quinn, senior youth officer with the project, explained what the aim is.
“We try to get young people from Mulhuddart interested in activities, pro- grammes and groups that enhance their personal development,” she told Northside People.
“Our main aim is to enhance the life chances of the youth with informal education where they learn life skills.”
The project offers something for everyone with a wide variety of activities including a drama club, cookery group, health and beauty, and fitness and Playstation groups.

Caitlin Piece of Parslickstown greatly enjoys the group and feels there should be a similar project in all areas.
“I think the youth project is brilliant as it gives us something to do after school,” the 11-year-old said.
Drumheath teenager Step-hanie Cleary has been involved in the project since it began five years ago.
“Over the years I’ve been in loads of groups and clubs within the project,” she explained. “One of the groups I was in won a Permanent TSB Foroige National Citizenship Award last year.
“I also got the chance to go on residential trips to Carlingford and Mayo. Even though I’m in Leaving Certificate now I still call into the youth project when I need information or advice.”
John Cahill, the manager of Blanchardstown Youth Service and Mulhuddart Community Youth Project described the night of the launch as a huge success.
“It was about the young people showcasing their work and recognising their contribution along with local volunteers to making Mulhuddart a positive thriving community,” he said.
“The night was a great success and had a huge audience. This was testament of the impact that the project has made in the local community.”
