| Feeling a connection with the new Mazda 6 |

 The first words that hit you in the display panel when you sit into the new Mazda 6 are ‘Zoom Zoom’ - which is the car company’s catchphrase.And this sporty-looking 1.8 litre certainly gives you that Zoom Zoom feeling. The previous version of the Mazda 6 won an amazing 130 auto awards worldwide, including the Semperit Irish Car of the Year in 2003. So no doubt about it, this new model has a lot to live up to. Mazda say that the Japanese expression ‘Kizuna’ or emotional connection‚ is the key to describe the philosophy behind the new model. They claim that even the most demanding drivers will feel at one with the style, handling and ride of the 6. Most manufacturers say that their new models are longer, wider, taller and have a longer wheelbase than the old model. This is also true of the Mazda 6, but of course these measurements are only in millimetres. Mazda have also managed to produce a model that is 35kg lighter than the old model. There are changes to the lights both front and back and I must say that while the front looks better, I preferred the old style rear lights. Really I suppose it’s just a matter of individual choice. Speaking of the rear end it took me a while to figure out where the boot release was. It turned out to be a discreet button on the boot door. Other changes include modified suspension to ensure a better ride and electronic power steering to save on fuel. We live at a time where there is much concern about C02 emissions. Another plus point for Mazda’s new model is that the company has managed to reduce the infamous C02 emissions, which should be good news for buyers after July 1 when the benefits of Mr Cowen’s recent budget kicks in. There is plenty of room for five well-built adults and the boot is huge. Internally the décor is predominantly black, but at night on the dash you get nice touch of blue when using the radio controls. You also get slave controls for the radio/CD on the steering wheel which also houses the cruise control buttons. The Mazda 6 is competing in a very tough segment where the opposition includes the award-winning Ford Mondeo. However, life in Ireland is very good for Mazda right now, but only time will tell how many awards the new Mazda 6 will pick up. The 6 is available in ten new colours. I drove a black model, which with its lovely curved design did attract a few envious glances. A friend in Drogheda who recently purchased a new model says he is very happy with his, even though he claims that it’s not really black, but brown-buff. The car definitely has that sporty feel as the seats are set low, a bit like a sports car. I cannot be sure if I experienced a Kizuna or emotional connection, but I enjoyed my time in the Mazda 6. Prices start at e27,495 for the 1.8 four-door petrol. Also available in 2.0 and 2.5. An estate version has recently joined the saloon and hatchback range. |
