A NUMBER of Northside schools are set to receive upgrades this summer under a e122 million Government plan. The local recipients will include: l The installation of new windows in Scoil Assaim Boys’ and Scoil Aine Girls’ schools in Raheny, Our Lady Immaculate Junior school in Darndale, St Nicholas of Myra in Kinsealy, Scoil Mhuire in Howth, Chanel College, Coolock, and The Donahies Community School; l Roof works will be completed at Naiscoil Ide Raheny, Scoil Bhride Donaghmede, St Helen’s Senior National School Portmarnock, St David’s CBS Artane, St Fintan’s High School Sutton and Gaelscoil Reachrann Donaghmede; l Electrical/mechanical improvements will be made to Scoil Bhreandain, Scoil Caitriona and Scoil Caitriona Naionain in Coolock, Holy Trinity Senior National School, Donaghmede, Colaiste Dhulaigh Coolock, St Paul’s Junior National School Donaghmede, and North Bay Educate Together National School, Kilbarrack; l Structural improvements will be made to St Paul’s Junior National School Ayrfield, Bayside Junior and Senior National Schools and St Paul’s College Raheny; l New toilets will be put in place in SN Colmcille Donaghmede, St Paul’s Senior National School Ayrfield, Burrow National School Sutton and St Helen’s Junior National School Portmarnock; and l Mercy College Coolock and Portmarnock Community School will benefit from improvements designed to improve the school curriculum, while Ard Scoil La Salle, Raheny will have improvements made to the school grounds. Averil Power, a Fianna Fail representative for Dublin North East, has welcomed the announcement. “More than half of our local schools will benefit from this investment, with students and their teachers returning to better facilities in September,” said Ms Power. “While the Summer Works Scheme will enable local schools to get vital small and medium scale building works done, I am conscious that several local schools are also waiting for the go-ahead for larger projects such as extensions. “I assure our local schools that I will continue to campaign vigorously for the larger projects to be progressed as quickly as possible.” Dublin North Central TD Finian McGrath (Ind) has also welcomed the funding for the upgrades. “This is a major boost for the Northside and will also generate work,” said Deputy McGrath. “I will continue the fight for improved schools.” Minister for Lifelong Learning Sean Haughey said he was delighted with the allocations. “The various projects will provide local employment for tradesmen and other construction workers and will ensure first class educational facilities,” stated Minister Haughey. Clontarf ward councillor Deirdre Heney (FF) also welcomed the funding announcement. “In total this year almost e579 million will be invested in school building infrastructure under the school building and modernisation programme,” said Cllr Heney. |
