Concerns raised over Roma group

AUTHORITIES are continuing to work together to overcome issues relating to the continued presence of a group of Roma people living in a vacant house in north county Dublin.
Up to 30 Roma people, who have been staying at a disused house in Donabate over the past two months, are believed to have moved to another vacant property in the area in recent days.
Dublin North Senator Brendan Ryan (Lab) said he was pleased that Fingal County Council was liaising with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Garda Immigration Bureau on the issue.
Senator Ryan said a great number of people, including minors, had been living in unsanitary conditions at the house, which had no running water or electricity.
He told Northside People he was concerned for the safety of those involved and had highlighted the issue with those who he believed should take an interest in the case.
“I want to see any social issues which may be of concern to be addressed,” Senator Ryan said.
“I am aware that Fingal County Council has been in touch with the HSE, An Garda Siochana, Pavee Point, the Department of Justice and St Vincent de Paul.
“This is a totally unacceptable situation and I am urging all relevant authorities to make every possible effort to ensure that the matter is resolved to the benefit of all concerned.”
A spokeswoman for Fingal County Council said that as the Roma group had been staying at a private property, it had no authority or responsibility to remove them.
“We do, however, have a responsibility in the area of environmental health and our environmental health officers have visited the site on a number of occasions following complaints from members of the public,” the spokeswoman said.
“Orders were issued in English and in the Roma language instructing those at the site to stop contributing to the further contamination of the site and to clean up existing contamination caused by them.
“We have been liaising closely with the HSE, Department of Justice and local gardai to help them find a resolution to this problem.”
