THE notion of a floating marina and a swimming pool on the River Liffey may well become a reality in the near future.
The Dublin Docklands Authority (DDA) has recently sought expressions of interest for consultancy services for the proposed development.
However, the proposal is still at an early stage of consideration and a specific location has not yet been decided.
David Higgins, Director of Finance with DDA, explained that the planned project is part of the River Regeneration Strategy for Dublin Docklands.
“In 2001 we introduced a water based regeneration strategy with the objective of maximising the amenity potential of the River Liffey,” he said.
“We want to continue to attract visitors to the Docklands area and are actively considering the establishment of a floating marina and swimming pool as part of this process.”
The request for expressions of interest is broken into two sections: engineering design services, including design, development and installation of the floating marina and swimming pool; and business consultancy services, which includes an analysis of the project’s social and economic feasibility.
Tenderers can provide submissions for both or either one of these services.
Following the current ‘expressions of interest’ stage, it is envisaged that the project will proceed to ‘invitation to tender’ stage, with construction possibly commencing in 2009.
If the plan goes ahead there will be full consultation with Dublin City Council, Dublin Port and the various community, business, conservation and environment interests in the Docklands area.
