c2.jpgTHE Citroen C2 R2 Irish Cup kicked off last weekend with the West Cork Rally.
The competition will be run over eight rounds and will end in Wexford on September 6 and 7.
Featuring identical C2 R2 cars, a generous prize fund and a chance of career progression, the competition is proving popular with young drivers.
Along with the prize funds available, Citroen Sport are offering a highly significant prize for the ‘Best of the Best’ of all the C2 R2 Championships throughout Europe, which will be decided in a shootout in France.
Irish sponsors, Gallic Distributors Ltd, are guaranteeing an entry to Rally Ireland 2009 to the winner of the Citroen C2 R2 Irish Cup.
The Citroen C2 R2 has proved a rich training ground for young Irish rally drivers, with Shaun Gallagher taking the Rookie of the Year title in last year’s Junior WRC championships.
Shaun will be competing in this year’s Junior WRC championships in a C2 Super 1600.
Four times World Champion Sebastian Loeb began his career in the Citroen Saxo, the predecessor to the Citroen C2 R2, with team mate Dani Sordo Junior WRC title holder in 2006 in a Citroen C2 R2.
Niall Costello Sales & Marketing Director of Gallic Distributors Ltd who import Citroen cars and light commercial vehicles said he was looking forward to watching the competition over the next few months.
“We are delighted to be title sponsor of the Citroen C2 R2 Irish Cup,” he said.
“This competition gives young rally drivers the opportunity to compete at a very professional level and test their ability against their peers.”
