FORMER SR Technics workers have secured a meeting with the Tánaiste’s office over the future of their promised third level courses. Northside People reported last week that funding had not yet been secured from the European Globalisation Fund (EGF) to retrain the workers at DIT and DCU despite courses having already commenced. John Devlin, a former SR Technics employee from Swords, said a meeting has been set up with the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment, the Department of Social Welfare and the Department of Education for this Thursday, March 11. “All officials attending are senior officials in their departments and myself, Matt McCormack and Dave Carr will attend as representatives of the workers,” Mr Devlin told Northside People. Over 60 former aircraft maintenance engineers made redundant from SR Technics were referred to DIT Bolton Street to take up a degree course to enable them to enhance their prospects of securing employment. Nearly a year after the first group of workers were made redundant they are still awaiting confirmation from Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan, and her officials that funding for the course is available. It was envisaged that the funding would come from the European Globalisation Fund similar to the scheme secured for the former Dell workers in Limerick who were also made redundant. Dublin North Senator Brendan Ryan (Lab) has called on the department to fast-track the application with the EU. |
