KEEN swimmers from all over Dublin are being urged to get involved in a major charity event next month. The Ian Daly Swim A Mile has become an important date in the swimming calendar and is sure to attract big participation again this year when it takes place on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. The swim, started by Brian and Laura Daly in memory of their nine-year-old son Ian who tragically died from a brain tumour in 2003, has the support of the Dublin senior football team, as it aims to raise as much as e50,000 for children’s charity Barretstown and Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. The swim will be held at the National Aquatic Centre (NAC), Blanchardstown, although swimmers can still take part in any swimming club or pool around the country. Dublin star Jason Sherlock officially launched this year's swim and Laura said her sports-mad son would have been delighted. "Ian was a huge fan of the Dublin football team, who he got to meet a few times and he especially loved Jayo (Jason Sherlock)," Laura told Dublin People Sport. “Dublin manager Pillar (Paul) Caffrey has always been very obliging to us and Ian loved to go and watch them play and to meet them. "Even when he was offered the chance for a once in a lifetime trip through the Make A Wish Foundation, Ian's wish was to meet the Dublin team again.” However, Laura said Ian’s first love had always been his swimming and that he would have been thrilled to get involved in the Swim A Mile event. "Knowing Ian he would be in the thick of the action,” Laura stated. “Right up until the week he passed away, Ian was in the pool swimming and he was always involved in it in some form or other.” Last year, the Ian Daly Swim A Mile raised e40,000 for the children’s charity and Laura said this year the target would be e50,000. “If we manage to raise e50,000 it will mean that we will have raised e200,000 overall since we started the event and that is absolutely brilliant,” she said. “It makes us very proud to see the number of people who are willing to get involved in the swim and people are constantly ringing up and asking about it.” Hollywood star Colin Farrell has been a supporter of the event and Laura said it was important for such celebrities to show their support. “It is great when these type of people are involved because the kids really look up to them,” she added.
