 FOOTBALLERS at a top South Dublin schoolboys’ club will have a spring in their step for the season’s run in after taking part in a coaching camp at a well-known London club.A group of 43 players, representing St Joseph’s Boys’ under 11 and 12 DDSL Premier teams and coaches took part in a joint Charlton Athletic/St Joseph’s Boys’ training and development camp under the guidance of Charlton’s Academy director, Steve Gritt. Over a three-day period, this comprehensive programme involved both teams taking part in separate coaching sessions together with challenge games against Charlton’s Academy sides. Ger Egan and Gerry Clements led the Sallynoggin contingent. The sessions, involving many of the academy’s top coaches including Steve Gritt and Steve Avery, were of the highest quality. In the challenge games, both Joey’s teams put on an excellent show. The under 11s unfortunately shipped a few late goals and lost 5–1, but this scoreline was not a true reflection on the game itself. There were some tremendous displays by a number of the 11s and they were unlucky not to score three or four goals themselves. However, credit to the Charlton team who were clinical with their finishing. The under 12s produced a superb performance against a very strong, gifted Charlton side that included a few powerful and mature players who are currently on trial with the club. Joey’s opened well and totally dominated proceedings with some excellent football and led 1-0 at the break. The second period saw the introduction of Charlton’s more mature players and that swung the game their way for a while. However, in the third period, Joey’s came right back into it, getting to grips with their bigger opponents and proving a match for the academy side. Unfortunately, some uncharacteristic defensive errors ultimately cost Joey’s the game and they lost 3-2. On the last day of their trip, the Joey’s group visited Charlton’s home ground, The Valley, and watched the hosts hold Watford to a 2-2 draw in a tense London derby. It was an intensive few days for the boys involved, but they all performed brilliantly and brought pride to their club. The visit to Charlton, the first as part of the new Charlton/St Joseph’s Boys’ player development agreement, was a great success and a very enjoyable experience. |
