Hurling team on the rise

AS a North Dublin GAA club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the success of one of its hurling teams has given even more cause for celebration.
Raheny GAA Club’s men’s hurling team has had an unbelievable last 12 months, winning the Dublin Intermediate Hurling Championship and recently gaining promotion to the senior ranks by finishing top of the Intermediate hurling league.
It is certainly a great way to kick off the club's anniversary celebrations, which will culminate in a gala dinner later in the year.
Speaking to Dublin People Sport, Kevin Broderick, Raheny's hurling mentor, said his team's recent success owed a lot to years of hard work by the players and coaching staff.
Kevin said he is looking forward to leading the team out in the Senior B Championship later this year and believes his team is more than capable of competing at the higher level.
Raheny's league success also means they will be competing at senior level in the league next season, which marks a rise in the team's fortunes and standing in the game in Dublin.
Kevin said he had no doubt that victory in a major All-Ireland seven-a-side tournament at St Jude's almost three years ago was the catalyst for Raheny's amazing run of form.
"I think after winning that tournament the players realised they could be as good as anyone around and our improvement has been gradual ever since," Kevin stated.
"We have been very consistent and I would put that down to the fact that the team has been working very hard at the game over the last number of years.”

Raheny captured their first Intermediate Hurling Championship in 37 years with an impressive 0-16 to 0-12 victory over Ballyboden St Enda's last July and the team has carried on from there by topping the league standings and are now looking forward to a league final clash with Thomas Davis.
Kevin said he has no fears for the team as they also prepare to do battle in the Senior B Championship this summer.
"I think we will be right up there again to be perfectly honest and will be looking to at least make a quarter or semi-final appearance," he stated.
"But our overall goal will be to try and make it into the Senior A Championship, so that is something for us to really push for in the future."
Kevin said Raheny's rise wouldn't have been possible without the strong support from the team sponsors.
"Mick Drew from Brantley Construction has been very good to us and we are grateful to him,” he added.
