ghettofabulous.jpgMEMBERS of a Northside Hip-Hop crew did their bit for the Haiti appeal last Sunday week (January 24) when they held an event that raised over e2,000.
‘Ghetto Fabulous’, one of the acts in RTE’s All-Ireland Talent Show, hosted the event at the Streets Ahead Dance Studios, which was a buzz with children from seven-years-of-age right up to adults.
‘Hip Hop for Haiti’ was soon in full swing with studio mirrors steaming up as adults and children alike donned their dancing shoes and got into the groove for this great cause.
The girls were eager to use their love of Hip-Hop dancing to try making a small difference in Haiti.
The atmosphere in the studio was electric with lots of people trying their hand at some new styles.
The day started off at 11am with a locking class taught by team captain Jessie O’Reilly, from Swords, along with a Breakdance class taught by Catherine Small, from Drumcondra.
Studio director Tara Treacy told Northside People: “There were many red faces when the first two classes ended but the kids just leapt into the next studio to start all over again.
“Fair play to all of them because it’s not easy to dance for four hours straight, but not only did the kids manage it, they loved it too.”
Other classes offered during the day included Krumping, a powerful and very energetic style and some New Skool commercial classes.
Lisa Craddock, from Artane, a member of Ghetto Fabulous, was delighted to be involved in the event.
“It was just amazing to see everyone’s spirit,” she said.
“The participants were so generous and some of the kids had been collecting sponsorship from friends and family to take part.”
Ghetto Fabulous, along with Streets Ahead Dance Studios, are proud to announce that the amount raised from the ‘Hip-Hop for Haiti’ event is e2,060.
This money will be donated to UNICEF where it will be used to help the children of Haiti.
Tara Treacy added: “The effort was commendable. The classes were fantastic and we had such a great turn out of people from all over Dublin.
“It’s really an incredible thing that the youth of Dublin has used Hip-Hop dance in such a positive way to make a difference in the lives of children on the other side of the world.
“I’m very proud of them. We even had some students bake cakes to sell at the event to raise more money for the appeal.”
Meanwhile, ‘Ghetto Fabulous’ are scheduled to appear on the All-Ireland Talent Show on February 21 in the Wild Card Show and are urging Dubliners to lend their support and vote on the night.
