Dublin Bus hits back at route claims

DUBLIN Bus has hit back at claims that it failed to make a proper request to run one its bus routes through the Port Tunnel.
Following its failure to obtain a licence to operate the 41X from Swords through the tunnel, Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy (FF) accused Dublin Bus of a delay in making a formal request for permission from Minister of Transport Noel Dempsey.
Deputy Kennedy claimed Dublin Bus was dragging its heels on the issue to the detriment of commuters.
However, in a statement to Northside People, Dublin Bus said Deputy Kennedy’s claims were incorrect and that he had been notified of this.
A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus said it applied for permission to run the bus through the tunnel as far back as March 2007.
“Ongoing discussions with the Department of Transport since this application culminated in a letter, dated February 20, in which Dublin Bus' proposals were not approved,” the spokeswoman explained.
“In light of these discussions, Dublin Bus have now amended the application and a revised application was submitted to the Department last Thursday morning, March 6.
“Dublin Bus will continue to make every effort to deliver the best service possible and to make use of this valuable piece of infrastructure for the benefit of commuters in the Swords area.”
Deputy Kennedy said he had been informed by the Department of Transport that Dublin Bus had not yet asked for permission and could therefore not be granted it.
“I have been pushing for Dublin Bus to be allowed use the tunnel for the last year and I have written to its chief executive requesting that they contact the Department of Transport as soon as possible in order to bring to an end this ongoing situation,” Deputy Kennedy said.
“It is in the interest of passengers and the public profile of Dublin Bus in North Dublin that permission be sought immediately so commuters can use the Port Tunnel with Dublin Bus.”
