Official library opening ends saga

FOLLOWING a lengthy wait through most of last year, the newly refurbished e7 million library for Malahide was officially opened last Thursday.
The library, situated in a 99-year-old building on the Main Street, has been tripled in size to allow for a much wider selection of books, magazines and computer services.
Mayor of Fingal Cllr Alan Farrell (FG) had the honour of opening the new library, which he said is dedicated to the people of Malahide and Fingal.
“This building is now accessible to all members of our community with extended opening hours to accommodate the changing lifestyles of all its users,” Cllr Farrell stated.
“It is also a place where many community organisations within Malahide and surrounding areas will flock to meet and discuss the issues of the day.
“In a village that has changed a lot over the last hundred years, Malahide library’s new facilities blend seamlessly with the old, complementing the beautiful design features of the former, allowing state of the art technology and of course, the most important facet of any public building, accessibility.”
Mayor Farrell said the Malahide Library building that was originally built in 1909, has always been a focal point for the local community.
“Not just because of its architectural merit, but because it played host to many dances, dramas and even concerts over the last one hundred years,” he stated.
Mayor Farrell also paid tribute to local librarians for their dedicated work.
“I am delighted to say thank you to a succession of dedicated, professional librarians, none more so than Paul Harris, our county librarian and Malahide librarian Marjory Sliney,” Cllr Farrell added.
“The wonderful tradition of free access to books and other recreational and educational amenities will now continue.”
The official opening of Malahide Library marks an end to community concerns over its continued closure due to staffing difficulties.
Last November, Northside People reported that hundreds of residents in Malahide had signed an online petition urging the Department of the Environment to lift a staffing embargo on Fingal County Council, which was hampering the opening of the library.
The council had stated that it did not have sufficient staff to run the extended library.
However, the staffing issue was finally resolved in December and the new library was opened to the public just six days before Christmas.
