Concern over Tallaght job losses

The Government has been urged to provide new employment in Tallaght following an announcement that more jobs are to be axed in the area.
The computer manual and magazine printers Microprint announced that it is to close its doors next month with the loss of 130 jobs.
The company cited declining volumes in the computer manual market, uncertainty over contracts, competition from UK-based magazine printers and a high cost-base as the key reasons for its decision to close on April 3.
It is the second devastating jobs blow for the Tallaght area this year after biscuit maker Jacob's decided last month to close its factory, cutting 230 jobs.
Staff at Microprint were given a month's notice of the closure but management stated that they were planning to immediately commence negotiations with the trade unions on a redundancy package.
Managing director, Alan Heatley, said the company could not sustain a further period of heavy losses in a fiercely competitive market.
“Following serious financial losses since late 2006, and with an increasingly competitive environment and rising cost pressures, it is very clear that the company, which is losing a significant amount of money on a weekly basis, could not sustain a further period of heavy losses,” he said.
Mr Heatley urged workers to keep up production for the next month to ensure contracts are honoured and the best pay-off package secured.
"We want to negotiate the most appropriate package possible and during this period we need to ensure continuity of supply to our indigenous Irish customer base and protect remaining revenues," he said.
Dublin South West TD, Pat Rabbitte (Lab) said the news was a serious blow to the local economy and workforce. He called on the Government to immediately focus on retraining the employees and to source new employment for the jobless in the area.
“Government departments and State agencies now need to become pro-active in terms of identifying jobs at risk and in attracting new industries to Ireland,” he said. “They should pay particular attention to areas where job losses have been the most acute.”
