Senior citizen devastated by loss of dog

A NORTHSIDE elderly woman has been left devastated since the loss of her dog some months ago.
According to her worried daughter-in-law, 86-year-old Gretta Hogan from Diswellstown has lost her appetite and has difficulty sleeping since her ‘best friend’ went missing before Christmas.
“Ben was her best pal, they went everywhere together,” daughter-in-law Sandra Comvery said.
“She was in bits all over Christmas and is still somewhat grieving her loss. He was her life.
“She’s lost loads of weight and we’re really worried about her.
“Every time the dog is mentioned, she just wells up in tears.”
Ms Hogan’s son has given her a loan of his own dog to help her sleep at night.
“Each night she would say ‘time for bed’ and Ben would jump on the bed before she had even got off the couch,” Ms Comvery explained.
“When he went missing she couldn’t sleep she was so lonely.”
The little Yorkshire Terrier was last seen in early December.
“He was mainly a house dog but he’d be left out for a few minutes each day to go to the toilet,” the worried daughter-in-law explained.
“One day some kids were petting him and he just disappeared.
“Maybe someone thought he was a stray.”
The family has worked tirelessly over the last few months to find the little dog.
“We put posters up everywhere and contacted the local vets and the DSPCA but he’s nowhere to be found,” Ms Comvery told Northside People.
“When we were putting up posters we noticed that a lot of dogs in the area had gone missing. We really hope that someone will read this and recognise the dog and see that it is returned.”
According to a spokesperson for the DSPCA, Yorkshire Terriers and Jack Russels are the main types of dogs that are swiped as they are easily sold on.
“Dogs are not often stolen but they can be stolen for the purpose of re-sale,” she explained.
“This dog could have been considered a stray by a member of the public who just took him home themselves. We would greatly recommend that people neuter their dogs and that they are micro-chipped.”
