WITH four games gone in the Suzuki National Football League Division 1B, the Dublin senior ladies’ football team look to be acquitting themselves very well.Having gained promotion to this division last season, the Dublin team may well have been excused the odd defeat as they looked to settle themselves into the higher echelons of the ladies’ game. However, defeat has not even entered the equation for the Dubs, and while they may have drawn three of their four games to date, they have all been high scoring and hugely entertaining matches against tough opposition. The best indication of how far this Dublin team has come in the last couple of years came in Cork last Sunday week (March 2), when they defeated the triple All-Ireland winning champions 2-11 to 2-8. It was the first defeat of the season for Cork, who still lie on top of the division with three wins, and shows that Dublin will have every chance of competing for promotion again this year. The win has pushed Dublin onto six points, just three behind leaders Cork and one point behind both Galway and Monaghan, two teams who they have already drawn with. The Dublin ladies’ next game will be in Meath this Sunday, March 16, where a win against the team lying bottom of the table will push them even closer to the top. And having just taken out the team that has won three consecutive All-Ireland senior titles in their own back yard Dublin will be full of confidence for the remainder of the season. The victory over Cork owed a lot to the sharp shooting of top forward Sinead Ahearn, whose seven points in this game has added to her overall impressive tally for the season. Rarely a game goes by when Ahearn doesn't get a decent quota of scores and with Anne Marie Murphy and Niamh Hurley both finding the back of the net, Dublin set themselves up for a famous win at Mallow GAA Club. |
