Superb Skoda stretches the legs

One new high-profile model introduction planned for Ireland later this year is the new Skoda Superb - flagship model of the Skoda range and successor
to one whose sales in Ireland have grown year-on-year since its introduction in 2002.
Revealed to the public at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Superb will make its Irish debut in dealer showrooms next September and at the 2008 National Ploughing Championships to be held in Kilkenny.
Designed as a powerful cross between a refined sedan and smart lift back, the new Superb promises buyers more comfort, more space, improved quality, a more efficient engine range, lots of high-tech electrical features and a car that's even better to drive.
Following the standard set by its predecessor, the new Superb comes with an even higher level of stretch-your-legs spaciousness, making it one of the roomiest cars in its class. It also comes with better, more supportive seats and a much higher standard of interior trim.
A very generous level of boot space, at 565 litres, is expandable to 1,670 litres while safety levels have been brought to a new level with as many as nine airbags fitted to protect front and rear passengers in the event of an accident.
One notable feature of the new Superb is its patented Twindoor system which offers two means of accessing the boot area. One, to open just the boot lid to put small items inside or, two, to lift the entire tailgate and rear window when bulkier items are being placed inside.
Other optional high-tech features will include bi xenon headlamps with AFS, an adaptive front light system that will help drivers to see around corners at night, a touch screen navigation system and a park assist, self parking system that equips the car to park itself automatically, dual-zone climate control and leather and Alcantara upholstery.
When fully available here, the Superb model offering will consist of six engine offerings - three petrol and three diesels. When the availability of automatic transmission, 4x4 and Greenline alternatives are added to the mix, together with three trim levels - Comfort, Ambition and Elegance, the choice of versions extends to a total of twenty-four models.
Petrol versions begin with the super-efficient 1.4-litre TSI 125bhp 6-speed manual unit, followed by a 1.8-litre TSI 160bhp 6-speed manual unit (which is also available with 7-speed DSG automatic or 4x4 format) and capped with a 3.6-litre FSI V6 260bhp version with DSG and 4x4 transmission.
Diesel versions are a 1.9-litre TDI PD 105bhp, a 2.0-litre TDI PD DPF 140bhp 6-speed unit (also with 6-speed DSG automatic) and a 2.0-litre TDI CR DPF 170bhp 6-speed manual version (also with 6-speed DSG automatic or 4x4). Also planned for Ireland is a Superb Greenline version powered by the 1.9-litre TDI PD fitted with DPF whose
CO2 emissions come in at a low 136g/km making it a highly-spacious, highly-attractive Band B vehicle in terms of Irish road tax and VRT.
At present, prices for the Irish market are still being calculated to take account of new emissions-based regulations and will be announced closer to introductions.
