New Dun Laoghaire tourism plan

Millions of euros are to be spent on an attempt to double the number of tourists and provide hundreds of extra jobs in the tourism industry in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown, it was announced last week.
Over e86 million is to be spent on devising a new master plan to boost the county’s flagging tourism industry. According to the promoters - the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Tourism Company - several different “private interests” and the Government will fund the master plan.
The main recommendations of the new five-year initiative will be to create two tourism hubs with information centres located in Dún Laoghaire and Dundrum to provide information on tourist attractions throughout the area. Suggested improvements to the existing tourism infrastructure include maximising the Dún Laoghaire seafront through eight key projects including the creation of a flagship attraction such as a water dome with a retractable roof.

Other proposals include the long mooted and controversial Carlisle Pier redevelopment, the regeneration of Dún Laoghaire town, a water park and a beach park and other general environmental improvements.
The Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Tourism Company said last week that Dundrum, having emerged in recent years as a major shopping destination, was the ideal second tourism hub for the area.
A cluster of new and existing heritage and nature tourist sites are also proposed to connect the entire county. Improved transport links are an essential part of the plan.
The ‘Masterplan’ came about after independent research carried out by Tourism Development International (TDI), an expert consultancy company based in Dún Laoghaire.
Over the latter half of 2007, TDI consulted with more than 60 stakeholders and examined structures for tourism in the area.
Commenting on the company’s findings, Peter McNulty, the managing director of TDI said the council now had a great opportunity to develop tourism as a major sector reaping substantially increased economic benefits for residents and tourism industry providers.
“A doubling of overnight tourism numbers to 250,000 over the next five years is considered realistic and eminently achievable,” he said. “This would result in a tourism industry worth e100 million and the creation of 1,000 – 1,250 additional jobs in the county by 2012.”
The chairman of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Tourism Company, Nicky Logue, formally presented a copy of ‘The Vision: A Tourism Masterplan for Dún Laoghaire Rathdown’ to the county council at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dún Laoghaire last week.
Speaking at the presentation Mr Logue said: “The recommendations of the masterplan are far-reaching and, if followed, will provide a proper, planned and phased approach for tourism in the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown area over the next five years.”
Full details of the 110 page Masterplan will be revealed at a private event on Tuesday, April 8 at the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney at 6pm.
