Residents’ anger over building works

LOCAL residents in Poppintree are concerned that emergency vehicles will not fit through the access route to their estate because of nearby building works.
The residents of Dolmen Court claim their estate is a “mess” since the works on a new development got underway recently.
A local resident said people were at the end of their tether with the level of disruptions affecting the Dolmen Court estate.
“We don’t have a proper footpath,” she claimed.
“The temporary one that was put up is bad and doesn’t even allow a buggy through it in some places.
“The road is filled with big potholes and stones.
“We’ve had a problem in that our refuse collection services didn’t come to pick up our rubbish a few times in the last few months.
She added: “But our biggest concern is with the access road to the estate which we feel is not wide enough anymore to fit an emergency vehicle through.”
The resident also claimed that the access road to the estate had been blocked for a few days last week.
“It was blocked with machinery which left some residents with no other choice but to find an alternative route through the building site,” she claimed.
The Poppintree Three housing scheme is the development adjacent to the Dolmen Court housing estate.
The scheme involves the construction of 74 social housing units for residents currently living in the Ballymun flats.
Local councillor Andrew Montague (Lab) said residents were quickly losing patience with the many day-to-day difficulties they face in their estate.
“The roads leading out of the estate are hard to walk on, never mind drive out of,” he told Northside People.
“Also it seems that it would be a very tight squeeze to try to get an ambulance or a fire engine into the estate.
“Residents are understandably annoyed with how much they are being inconvenienced by the building works that are going on nearby.”
Cllr Dessie Ellis (SF) called on Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL) to address the concern of residents.
“BRL should ensure that the building contractors are following the correct health and safety practices,” he said.
“There seems to be a lot of loose hoarding around the Dolmen Court estate and the residents are generally very unhappy with the situation.”
The Poppintree Three works should eventually benefit Dolmen Court residents as the scheme also includes ‘precinct improvement works’ where the estate’s underground services such as water, drainage, Eircom and ESB services will be renewed and replaced.
The court’s existing footpaths, public lighting and garden walls will also be replaced.
A spokesperson for BRL said it was working to address the concerns of residents.
“Extensive consultation has been ongoing with the local residents on a one-to-one basis as well as in the form of group workshops to identify and agree the full extent of works to be carried out in the public areas and to each individual property,” she explained.
“The contractor is making every effort to maintain Dolmen Court residents’ quality of life during construction works and is adhering to all regulations, including health and safety, to ensure that the works are carried out with as little inconvenience as possible.
“It is inevitable that the extent of building and renewal work which is taking place in such close proximity to Dolmen Court will have an affect on the day to day lives of the residents.”
The BRL spokesperson said its health and safety officers are monitoring the site on an ongoing basis.
