DUBLIN Bus has expressed anger at its failure to get a licence to run one of its bus routes through the Port Tunnel.
The Department of Transport has turned down an application from the company for a licence to use the tunnel for its 41X bus route, which travels from Swords to Belfield through the city centre.
Bus drivers and commuters on the 41X had hoped that use of the tunnel would cut travelling times at rush hour in half, as the bus would have been able to avoid chronic traffic congestion.
However, the Department of Transport stated that as it has already given a licence to a private operator to run an express service from Swords through the Port Tunnel to the city centre, it would not be offering a licence to Dublin Bus.
A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus told Northside People it was disappointed at the department’s decision.
A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council said the Northern Cross Town Centre, in common with nearby developments like Belmayne and Clongriffin, is being developed in line with the North Fringe Area Action Plan.
She said this plan was agreed by the city council in 2000 prior to the commencement of any major developments in the area.
“In terms of the current road proposals adjacent to the Northern Cross Town Centre, Dublin City Council is implementing the original plan to provide a road south of the River Mayne in tandem with a linear park,” the spokeswoman told Northside People.
“Dublin City Council is committed to the development of this linear park along the River Mayne, which will span both sides of the river.
“The council’s aim is that all development adjacent to the river will be carried out in such a manner as to minimise the impact on the river, preserve existing protected structures and facilitate the creation of an attractive linear park.”
As part of the park, a cycle track and footpath will be provided along the river, and footbridges will be incorporated at various locations to provide linkage between the parkland areas on both sides.
“These footbridges will provide ready access for residents of the Northern Cross Town Centre to the wooded and park areas on the northern side of the river,” added the spokeswoman.
