ELEVEN Dublin players make up the Ireland Under 18 team that will be competing in the Tenpin Bowling European Youth Championships in Helsinki from March 15.The Irish team - six males and five females - from bowling clubs and centres across Dublin, have been taking on extra training in a bid to compete with the best tenpin bowlers of their age in Europe. Robyn Phipps, Catriona Mulhall, Ciara McDunphy, Niamh Haughton and Sara Kelly will compete for Ireland in the girls’ section, and will be hoping to give some personal best displays when the action officially gets underway on March 17. Meanwhile, the boys’ team comprising Karl Doherty, Keith RyanHart, Kieran Grice, Simon English, David Noonan and Jonathan Phillips will aim to garner great experience from the event that will feature teams from 29 different countries. Team manager Eoin McDunphy told Dublin People Sport that the players are really looking forward to the championships. “Three of the girls were in the team that competed in the European Youth Championships in Greece last year, so they will obviously be hoping to improve on what they achieved there last year,” Eoin said. “There will be a lot of good teams and players at the event, making it difficult for us to capture medals, but the whole team has been preparing very well for this and will hope to put on as best a performance as they possibly can.” While Eoin is extremely impressed with the talent of his young side, he explained that some of the top players from other countries do have an advantage at major championships. “If you look at some of the Eastern European teams, some of their players are already at it full time whereas our players have to play and practice during their spare time after school and college,” he stated. “The schedule for the tournament also means that the players will be out there from 9am until 8pm on some days, which is a very long day, and something they will have to get used to.” Nevertheless, Eoin said bowling centres in Dublin and the Irish Tenpin Bowling Association (ITBA) are really putting the effort into enticing players into the game, which is starting to pay dividends. The make up of the Irish side, from bowling clubs at ALSAA (Dublin Airport), Superdome in Palmerstown, Leisureplex Tallaght and Leisureplex Stillorgan highlights the growing popularity of the sport in the capital. “All the centres are setting up teams and getting the young people involved in the game, so the standard is rising,” Eoin added. “And one of the great things for us is that a number of the players will still be young enough to come back and compete at next year’s European Youth Championships, and by then they will have gained great experience.” After arriving in Helsinki on Friday, March 15, followed by a day of practice on the Saturday, the girls’ team will finally take to the lanes on the Sunday to compete in the doubles event. The boys’ action begins a day later and the event will continue until Sunday, March 23, when the closing ceremony will be followed by a farewell banquet enjoyed by all the competing teams. |
