 THE Dublin ladies’ football team seem to have something of the draw specialists about them after another cracking league game against Galway on February 24 finished all square.Having already drawn with Monaghan and Kildare, Dublin went into this game at Naomh Mearnog, Portmarnock, in search of their first Suzuki Division 1B league victory, but were unable to get past Galway in a scintillating 2-9 to 2-9 tie. Dublin got off to the better start with Anne-Marie Murphy slotting home a penalty to add to early points from herself and Amy McGuinness. Galway looked to be really struggling when McGuinness found the back of the net for the Dubs’ second goal, but they eventually settled their nerves with a goal of their own through Anne Gilmore. However, Dublin continued to maintain their first half dominance, with Niamh Hurley and Sinead Ahearn both scoring points and, despite a point each for Gilmore and Rebecca McPhilbin for Galway, the visitors found themselves 2-5 to 1-2 down at half time. Sinead Ahearn got Dublin off to the perfect start in the second period with another point before Galway started their excellent fightback with three unanswered points from Gilmore, Annette Clarke and Kara Mullins. Ahearn was doing her best to keep the Dubs in the ascendancy with two more points, but a goal from Galway narrowed the gap to just a single point as the game entered its closing stages. Two more points from Galway, the second of which was an injury time score from Claire Heir, put them into the lead for the first time in the match and looked to have broken the Dubs’ hearts. But there was to be one more twist to this intriguing encounter when Lyndsey Davey knocked over an excellent point to the relief of her Dublin teammates. Dublin: Cliondha O’Connor, Patricia Gordon, Thressa McConnell, Maria Kavanagh, Orla Colreavy, Denise Masterson, Siobhan McGrath, Niamh McEvoy, Amy McGuinnes, Mary Nevin, Anne-Marie Murphy, Ciara Murphy, Lyndsey Davey, Sinead Ahearn, Niamh Hurley. Scorers: Amy McGuinnes 1-2, Sinead Ahearn 0-4, Anne-Marie Murphy 1-1, Lyndsey Davey and Niamh Hurley 0-1 each. |
