A LOW budget movie shot on location in the Raheny/Clontarf area is taking the film world by storm.
32A tells the story of a teenage girl’s coming of age in Raheny in 1979.
The movie, directed by Marian Quinn, a sister of Aidan Quinn, who also stars in the film, has been receiving rave reviews from critics. It had its Dublin premiere last Friday, as part of the Jameson Dublin Film Festival.
According to Tommy Weir, one of 32A’s producers, it was a long, hard process to get the movie recognised but this is now happening.
“We’ve just got word that the movie will have a general release probably in spring/summer and hopefully, it will be shown at UCI Coolock given its Northside connections,” said Mr Weir.
Marian Quinn was born in Chicago, but spent her early teenage years in St Assam’s, Raheny, and attended Manor House School.
Her movie is described as a bittersweet coming of age tale set in the world of a 13-year-old girl in 1979 Dublin, attending a Catholic school for girls.
The girls’ strict routine is set off against the budding interest in the opposite sex and their own changing bodies, illustrated by their preoccupation with bras and bra sizes.
Amusingly, 32A is not only their bra size but also the route number of the Dublin city bus they ride.
Many Northsiders will identify with a central theme of the movie, namely The Grove disco, which took place in St Paul’s, Sybil Hill.
In order to achieve authenticity, Ms Quinn went to the trouble of getting DJ legend Cecil Nolan, The Grove’s original DJ, to star in a cameo role in the film.
“It was a great experience and I was very happy to be associated with the film,” Cecil told Northside People.
“It never ceases to amaze me just what an impact The Grove actually had on people’s lives.”
The actual Grove scene was shot on location in St Mary’s School, Baldoyle, with Cecil spinning the discs.
“Apparently, they couldn’t get St Paul’s Hall for the day so they did it in St Mary’s and it took a full day’s shooting to get the scene right,” explained Cecil.
“I don’t actually remember Marian from The Grove but I do remember her friend, Jackie, who used to come up to the desk with requests for songs.”
Meanwhile, the series of Grove reunion dates continues to go from strength to strength with discs being spun by DJ Andy Colbert, with special appearances by the legend Cecil.
The next Grove reunion will take place on Easter Sunday, March 23, at The Button Factory. Doors open at 9pm.
