STAR players and coaches from the Dublin ladies’ GAA scene descended on Castleknock Country House Hotel on February 8 for the annual O’Neill’s Dublin Ladies’ Gala Awards.New chairperson, Camillus Kilpatrick (Naomh Olaf), opened proceedings in front of a packed house by welcoming the invited guests, Helen O’Rourke (chief executive of Cumann Peil Gael Na mBan), Danny O’Connor (Dublin Men’s County Board), Cormac Farrell (O’Neill’s) and former player and guest host for the evening, Joanne Cantwell. The first presentation of the evening was to Seamus McKenna, coach of Foxrock/Cabinteely, in recognition of the club’s magnificent achievement in winning the Vhi All-Ireland Junior Club title in 2007. Brian Powell, manager of the Dublin under 14 team who captured the All-Ireland title, was next up to receive an award for that brilliant success. Following the awards dinner, host Joanne Cantwell spoke about the huge achievement of all the players in attendance. She called on Dublin Minor manager, Dave Cullen (Lucan Sarsfields) to introduce his team for the presentation of their Minor Leinster Championship winning medals, as well as their All-Ireland runners-up medals. After thanking all those involved with his team, Dave Cullen announced Lyndsey Davey (Skerries Harps) as the Minors’ Player of the Year, and Sinead Goldrick (Foxrock/Cabinteely) as Players’ Player of the Year’. The ladies’ Senior B team had an excellent 2007 by reaching the All-Ireland final and manager Paul McLoughlin (Raheny) was called up to present each of his players with their runners-up medals. Suzanne Murray, from Round Towers, scooped the Player of the Year award for the Senior B team, while Aisling Farrelly (Ballyboden St Enda’s) was announced as the Players’ Player of the Year. Finally, it was the turn of Dublin Senior manager Gerry McGill to introduce his team to receive their Suzuki Division 2 National League winning medals. Again, after thanking all involved, Gerry announced Sinead Ahearn (St Sylvester’s) as Player of the Year and Denise Masterson (Ballymun Kickhams) as Players’ Player of the Year. Naomh Mearnog’s Kathleen Colreavy received the Distinguished Contribution Award from last year’s winner Patricia Monahan. Kathleen’s involvement in Dublin ladies’ football has spanned many years, as she has held the position of county secretary and assistant secretary, as well as being liaison officer for the county Minor and Senior teams. Last year, as well as being assistant secretary, Kathleen was a selector and a vital part of the Senior B management team. l ACCOLADE: Pictured left, Sinead Ahearn (St Sylvester’s), right, pictured receiving her Player of the Year award from Helen O’Rourke, chief executive of Cumann Peil Gael Na mBan.
