FEBRUARY proved to be a hectic month for a North Dublin veterans’ rugby team.On February 1, Wildebeests, representing Coolmine Rugby Club, hosted Italian side, Capitolina, who travelled over to support their country in this year’s Six Nations clash, which Ireland narrowly won at Croke Park. The match was played under floodlights at Coolmine’s home ground in Ashbrook. The hosts got off to a flying start, with some great pressure from the pack at the breakdown being converted into an early score, following a blistering run from out-half Nigel Darling. The Coolmine pack continued to pile on the pressure, with Kieran Fulcher and Paulo Rodriguez repeatedly breaking the gain line. This led to the second Coolmine score by Man-of-the-Match, Darragh Frawley, as he sliced the Capitolina defence to cross the line for a superb try. Unfortunately, Coolmine eased off, allowing Capitolina to touch down on the half-time whistle. The second half started in the same vein as the end of the first, and despite a superb last quarter from the Wildebeests, the score ended 15-10 in Capitolina’s favour. The following weekend, Wildebeests travelled to Paris to take on French side, Clinchy, but lost out again, 20-15. In a game that was to mirror Ireland’s fortunes the following day, Coolmine were 20-0 down at the interval. After some harsh words at half-time from Coolmine captain Fergus O’Shea, the Wildebeests found a new lease of life and took the game and the ball to the opposition. Both forwards and backs dominated the collisions. This led to Coolmine’s first try with a powerful break from Philip Keogh who offloaded in contact to Fergus O’Shea who powered over for Coolmine’s first try. Fergus O’Rourke added the West Dubliners’ second try. The following day the team travelled to Stade de France to cheer on Ireland and the club’s head coach Bernard Jackman. The Wildebeests train every Tuesday in Ashbrook at 7.45pm. All are welcome. |
