Challengers sought for Land Rover adventure

TWO competitors are being sought to represent Ireland in one of the world’s most exciting adventure events - the Land Rover G4 challenge.
A mixed gender team is being sought to compete against teams from across the world in a test of driving skill that will push competitors to the limits of their abilities.
A series of national selections will take place to find a one-man, one-woman team to take on 17 other nations in the three-week long finals in Asia in 2009.
Competitors will help to generate more than e1.5 million for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
David Harpur, managing director of Land Rover Ireland, explained the challenges that the participants will face in the competition.
“The challenge is an amazing event that gives people the chance to experience a real adventure,” he said.
“It not only tests physical strength but also mental and strategic talents and teamwork.

“The challenge takes competitors to remote places to take part in wild adventures on terrain that tests both body and mind while pushing our Land Rover vehicles to the extremes.
“The challenge, as always, will be environmentally considerate and this time will be raising money for a very worthy cause, so we will really be giving something back.”
Gary Robertson from Fermanagh represented Ireland at the 2006 Challenge and says it was the most difficult experience he ever faced.
“It pushed each competitor’s strength, endurance, mental agility and perseverance to the limits,” Gary said.
“Conditions were extreme in terms of the environment. We experienced lush forests with torrential rain and then basking sunshine, then up in the Andes, the temperature dropped to -13°C at night.”
National selections take place in November to decide the two men and two women to go through to International Selections in early 2009.
From this event one man and one woman will be selected to represent Ireland in the Challenge Finals in mid-2009.
