GARDAI are continuing to investigate last week’s fatal shooting on the Malahide Road.
On Wednesday, June 17, Thomas Joyce (20) was shot a number of times and removed to Beaumont Hospital where he died a short time later.
Gardai at Coolock say they are investigating the shooting, which occurred at approximately 7.30pm at Grove Lane. Mr Joyce is the 15th gun murder victim this year.
Cllr Tom Brabazon (FF), who was on the scene just moments after the shooting, told Northside People of his grave concerns following the killing.
“I was bringing my son to GAA training nearby when I heard the shots,” Cllr Brabazon said.
“I went to see what had happened and quite a crowd had gathered at the scene.
“Up to 200 people had gathered at nearby football pitches for training and a stray bullet could easily have led to further tragedy.
“It’s a worrying public safety concern when people are being shot and I would condemn these actions without reservation.”
Cllr Brabazon said “life has no value for these people”.
“It is frightening that this took place so close to a place where a large crowd of people were gathered,” he added.
“There is a fear that this situation will escalate and I would call on the gardai to take steps to prevent further shootings.”
Dublin North East TD Terence Flanagan (FG) criticised the Government’s failure to tackle gangland crime.
“There has to be a zero tolerance approach taken against crime,” he said.
“Mandatory sentencing must now be brought in for murder.
“Sentencing for murder in this country is too lenient which has lead to the increase in murder rates.
“If there was adequate tough sentencing policies brought in, it would be a huge deterrent to criminals.”
