A YOUNG Raheny playwright is hoping that his original one-man comedy play will propel him towards international recognition.‘Whacker Murphy’s Bad Buzz’ is the work of Edwin Mullane (22) and has already enjoyed considerable success, playing at The International Bar and The Cobblestone Bar last summer. Also, recently, it received very favourable reviews in London. Edwin told Northside People: “We’ve just heard the news that we have been booked to play the Underbelly venue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the month of August, which we are delighted with.” Underbelly is one of the largest venues at the fringe festival and has been the springboard for many comedy productions to go on and achieve success. Edwin graduated from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire in 2007 with a BA in English, Media and Cultural Studies. While studying, he was also heavily involved in the drama society, performing in productions such as Beckett’s ‘Waiting For Godot’. While at college he was introduced to renowned Beckett actor, Tom Hickey, who later agreed to direct ‘Whacker Murphy’s Bad Buzz’. “Getting Tom on board was a real coup and he’s done a marvellous job with the show,” added Edwin. The play revolves around Dublin ‘Wiseboy’ Whacker Murphy who finds himself in debt to the tune of e1,500 to Jimmy Mo - one of Dublin’s biggest ‘nutbags’. Other characters such as ‘Scags Murphy’, ‘Ed The Horse Mooney’ and ‘Wila Flood’ do their best to help Whacker out but to no avail. Will he pay Jimmy Mo the money by Thursday or suffer the consequences? ‘Whacker Murphy’s Bad Buzz’ will play the International Bar from Tuesday, March 3, to Saturday, March 8, at 7pm. Another playwright and friend of Edwin’s, Ricky Payne, will also present his play, ‘Womb Man’, at The International Bar from Monday, March 10, to Saturday, March 15, at 7pm. The play is described as an adult comedy show that features fearless writing and shows no mercy for political correctness. Both playwrights hope to tour their respective plays extensively during the summer months in Ireland and the UK. |
