Ireland’s fastest growing motor group shows no sign of slowing down PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 February 2008
duffy.jpgWhen Joe Duffy was appointed the first solo BMW Dealership in Ireland in 1972, the company, founded by himself and Bill Thompson opened its doors with only four members of staff.
Today, with over 140 employees, the group has seen further appointments as a main MINI, BMW Motorrad, Mazda and most recently Opel dealer.
All franchises have gone from strength to strength and Joe Duffy continues to hold the number one position in Ireland for BMW, MINI and Motorrad.
As Ireland’s fastest growing motor group and with authorised centres for several leading franchises such as Opel and Mazda, Joe Duffy boasts an extensive range of makes and models.
And the opening of the new Opel dealership on the North Road, Dublin 11 is a strong indication of their aspirations for the future.

The new showroom, which co-hosts Mazda and Opel, has recently been refurbished to mirror that of any top quality showroom. It has spacious settings, friendly staff and a relaxing coffee area with full internet access for customers.
Even on a Tuesday afternoon, the showroom is busy, with customers bringing their cars in for service, or to view the new and used Opel and Mazda stock.
Geoff Walsh, Sales Manager for Joe Duffy Opel states: “We are very excited at the challenge of developing our Opel franchise. With such a strong selection of models like the new Opel Corsa, Astra and our full commercial range we have strong ambitions to become Ireland’s largest Opel dealer.”
Opel’s recent market growth has been largely attributable to the new exciting product range such as the new Opel Antarra and the attraction of the Opel 50:50 offer. This deal offers customers the opportunity to pay 50 per cent deposit or trade in on their new Opel and the rest in 2010.
“Already this year we have seen a large number of customers availing of the Opel 50:50 offer,” Geoff adds. “It represents the opportunity for customers to get that new car they wanted while spreading repayments back over an achievable period interest free.”
One identified reason for the success of the Joe Duffy Group is the quality of service they offer customers. The group slogan ‘It’s our people that make the difference’ is clearly a principle the group strongly believes in.
“For us customer satisfaction is viewed as a top priority,” says Richard Murphy, Mazda Brand Manager. “Regardless of whether a customer is buying a new car, bringing their car in for a service, or stopping by for a coffee, we expect their time at any Joe Duffy dealership to be comfortable and relaxing.”
The Mazda franchise similar to Opel is relatively young however it has witnessed significant growth over the past year.
“Customers are very excited by the new product range Mazda has to offer,” states Richard. “I was recently reading a review by Jeremy Clarkson on his top 25 cars over the past five years. Four Mazdas were ranked in his top 25 including the Mazda MX-5, RX-8, the new CX-7 and the Mazda6 MPS. That’s an unbelievable result considering the cars this guy is driving.”
The new dealership has a magnificent forecourt which hosts a large selection of used Opel, Mazda and other makes.
John O Doherty, Used Car Manager for Opel and Mazda declares: “We believe it is important that our customers are presented with choice. All of our used cars benefit from multi-pre sale check, 12 months roadside assistance, history verification and 12 months warranty. Ensuring our customers are satisfied for a long time after they leave the dealership.”
In Ireland, with commuting times and job hours becoming increasingly longer, where do people get the time to visit dealerships to book services and collect information on cars they would like?
Robert Hyland, Marketing Controller for Joe Duffy Group says: “People have become more and more time strapped over the past few years and do not have the luxury of visiting dealerships two or three times to purchase a car, order a service or enquire about a particular model.  Conscious of this we have developed a group website www.joeduffy.ie that offers the ability for customers to view our entire stock of over 400 used cars, book their car in for a service, order brochures or parts, view and if they are interested in selling their car even submit an enquiry to have their car valued by us.”
Robert adds: “Often people are unsure of exactly what make and model they want and this is understandable, as a car is a major investment for everyone. We issue weekly e-newsletters informing registered customers of our current offers and a complete list of our used car stock. This is the perfect opportunity for customers unsure about what car to purchase, as it allows them to monitor our ever changing stock from the comfort of their own home. People can simply register online at our group site.
“We have recently had a new radio advertisement promoting the new group site and everyone seems to love the new jingle in the advert. I have heard everyone from young children to adults whistling the tune. It has really taken off well.”
The Joe Duffy Group has come a long way since it first opened its doors in 1972. The late Joe Duffy would be proud of the leaps and bounds the group has achieved as is the retired Bill Thompson, who still frequently visits the dealership.
One thing that is for sure is Ireland’s fastest growing motor group is showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
