plunkets18.jpgA WHITEHALL school was celebrating earlier this month when its Leaving Cert students won the CDVEC Intermediate Basketball title at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
Plunket College, mentored by head of PE, Paul Prior, defeated a very strong Colaiste Dhulaigh team 20-16 after a major struggle.
The Coolock side, coached by PE teacher Richard Kelly had the better of the early exchanges and took an early 6-2 lead.
However, Plunket College settled after a shaky opening period and clawed their way back into the match.
The lead changed hands several times during the game and the outcome was not settled until the final few minutes when Plunket College just had that little bit extra in reserve. Keith Rodden came off the bench to land the winning baskets.
Overall, it was a tough, physical encounter with no quarter asked or given from either side.
On the Colaiste Dhulaigh side, Patrick Gurr was their most influential player, scoring 10 of his side’s 16 points.
For Plunket College, Dylan Westphal and Stephen Costello made full use of their size and strength underneath the basket in attack and defence to upset the opposition.
Wesley Delaney worked tremendously hard throughout the game before he was unfortunately fouled out and had to leave the court.
Michael Bowes, Craig Cormack and Daniel Howard all battled hard throughout, with Keith Rodden showing his value to the team by popping up with four baskets off the bench.
Dylan Westphal (captain) lifted the trophy for Plunket College.
