AIB have joined forces with the GAA to launch a new initiative aimed at increasing the participation of young people in Gaelic games. The GAA ‘Play and Stay’ introductory blitzes are an extension of the ‘Go Games’ programme, which caters for the varying developmental needs of young players. They will specifically target children aged between seven and eight, for whom this may be their introduction to Gaelic games and a GAA club. The blitzes will take place at over 530 centres across the 32 counties during May and June. Speaking at the launch, Nicky English, AIB, said: “We are delighted to support this wonderful initiative, which aims to encourage a new generation of children to our games. “It will offer great benefits to children through participation in sport, and by learning the values of being part of a GAA club.” School visits will be organised nationwide in April to give details of how to get involved in these blitzes, and outline the long-term benefits of being part of a team and a GAA club. President of the GAA Nickey Brennan said the initiative is all about opening up the GAA to a new audience of young people, and increasing the participation of children in its games. “This will get them into a club near where they live, for what will be a fun and relaxed introduction to playing Gaelic football or hurling,” stated Mr Brennan. “The club is at the heart of the GAA, and continual club development, including new members, is vital to ensure that the GAA continues to thrive and succeed.” |
