school.jpgANOTHER busy year of athletics is to get underway after the Irish Schools’ Athletics Association (ISSA) announced details for the 2008 KitKat Irish Schools' Athletics Programme.
This year marks the 46th anniversary of the event. Over one million students from over 850 secondary schools across the country have taken part in the programme, which is known as the bedrock of Irish athletics.
Since the programme was first launched, some of Ireland’s most famous sporting stars, including Sonia O’Sullivan, Caitriona McKiernan, Eamonn Coghlan, David Gillick and Victor Costello have taken part.
Details of this year’s sponsorship, which covers the Provincial and All-Ireland Cross Country and Track and Field events, were announced at an official presentation ceremony at the Montrose Hotel, attended by Olympic hammer hopeful Eileen O’Keeffe.

Sponsorship cheques were presented by sponsors Nestlé Ireland to Michael Hunt, president of the ISAA, and representatives from the Leinster Schools’ Athletics Union and the Connacht, Munster and Ulster Schools’ Athletics Associations.
The sponsorship funds the organisation for nationwide and regional competitions, which this year will see over 26,000 young athletes from across Ireland participating.
Eileen O’Keeffe said the KitKat Irish Schools’ Athletics programme had played a significant role in developing her career as an athlete.
"The programme provided me with a solid foundation for competing on the world stage and with the discipline necessary to achieve success," Eileen stated.
Louise Shorthall, marketing manager at Nestlé Ireland, said the company was proud to continue its support for the Irish Schools’ Athletics Association. “Nestlé Ireland remains committed to supporting young sporting talent throughout the country and we are delighted to renew our sponsorship with the Irish Schools’ Athletics Association," Ms Shortall stated.
Key highlights in the 2008 Irish Schools’ Athletics programme are as follows:
February 20 at Santry - the Irish Schools’ Leinster Schools’ Cross Country Championships.
March 8 at Dartfield, Loughrea, County Galway - the Schools' All-Ireland Cross Country Championships.
May 17 and 21 at Santry – the Track and Field Championships.
May 31 at the Tullamore Harriers Stadium, County Offaly - the Schools’ All-Ireland Track and Field Championships.
