finish.jpgON an unseasonably balmy afternoon, Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club’s Vinny Mulvey stormed to victory in the 24th annual AXA Raheny 5 Road Race last Sunday week (January 27).
Mulvey, who also won the race in 2006, led from gun to tape, finishing in a time of 23.37, just seven seconds outside his winning time two years ago.
Mulvey enjoyed his most productive ever season in 2006 by winning the national cross country title, as well as the Irish and British 10,000 metre crowns on the track.
He missed much of last year as a result of a knee injury, so this win showed he's right back on form and he will be hoping the success marks the start of another big season.

There was a terrific battle in the men's race for the other podium finishes with Brian Maher (Kilkenny City Harriers) just edging out Raheny's second finisher, Cillian O'Leary.
Last year's runner up Mick Clohisey was fifth, which gave the host club an easy win in the team event.
Indeed, it proved such a good day that even the Raheny B team took second place.
Another former Raheny winner, Marie McCambridge (Dundrum South Dublin), comfortably won the women's race in 26.20, just two seconds outside her own course record.
Raheny Shamrock AC’s Annette Kealy was second with Niamh Devlin (DSD) third, meaning Dundrum won the women's team prize ahead of Raheny and Civil Service.
The Raheny vets men's and women's team won their respective categories while other local winners included Eoin Brady (Raheny Shamrock) first Over 40, Rita Kansanniva (Civil Service) first Over 45 and Mags Grennan (Clonliffe Harriers) first Over 50.
In the one-mile juvenile race the host club's Timmy Moriarty and Chloe Doran won the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively.
There were large fields in all the races on the programme.
St Francis Hospice, Raheny, was again the nominated charity for the event.
