sport1.jpgREGARDLESS of where their allegiance lay, few football followers growing up in Dublin in the 1950s could not have been affected by the tragic events of February 6, 1958.
A jet carrying the Manchester United football squad crashed on an icy runway in Munich, claiming the lives of 23 victims including some of the club’s best players.
The tragedy of the accident was felt sorely in the North Dublin area of Cabra, as Liam Whelan, a Manchester United star who grew up there, was one of those who lost his life.

Now fifty years on from the Munich Air Disaster, Cabra has shown that it will never forget local hero Liam Whelan.
The community has arranged a series of events for this Saturday, February 2, in honour of the Manchester United and Ireland legend.
Organised with the agreement of the Whelan family and the Irish Manchester United Supporters’ club, the event will include a wreath laying ceremony at the Liam Whelan Bridge on Connaught Street and a commemorative mass in Christ the King Church, Cabra.
Also, representatives from all football teams in Cabra will play a challenge match against former and current League of Ireland stars at Beggsboro Grounds on Kilkiernan Road.
A memorial plaque will be presented to the Whelan family to commemorate the event, while players on both sides will wear commemorative jerseys.
The Cabra Select team will all bear the Number 8 (Liam’s number) and the name, Whelan, on the back of the shirts.
Aodhan Perry, one of the event organisers, described Liam Whelan as a sporting icon to an older generation.
“Our aim is to use Liam's legacy to encourage today's generation to strive to emulate his sporting genius,” Mr Perry stated.
“Liam came from a humble working class background and played on the European stage.
“In an age of sporting heroes, we wish to remember a true Cabra hero.”
The full events taking place on February 2 are as follows:
12pm - Assemble at plaque on Liam Whelan Bridge, Connaught Street.
12.15 - Wreath laying ceremony.
1pm - Commemorative Mass in Christ the King Church, Cabra. (Celebrant is Bishop Eamonn Walsh).
3.30pm - Junior soccer display match - Under 11s.
4pm - Liam Whelan Memorial Match, Cabra Select versus League of Ireland Select at Beggsboro Grounds, Kilkiernan Road.
