sport2.jpgA WEST Dublin boxing club received a financial boost a fortnight ago when a Government minister presented its members with a cheque for e5,000.
Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan handed St Brigid’s Amateur Boxing Club in Dublin 15 the cheque, which will cover the cost of a new boxing ring and a business plan that is being prepared for the club’s new state-of-the-art gym.
Local building company, Knife-Edge Developments, is constructing the much-needed facility in the   Buzzardstown/Mulhuddart area.

The company is owned by Paul and Anthony Dunne, who, according to a spokesman for St Brigid’s Amateur Boxing Club, are fully committed to the project and also feel that Dublin 15 needs to have a community based boxing facility.
The boxing club, which has been based at St Brigid’s Community Centre for the last 20 years, will now be able to open its doors seven days a week and cater for more than 300 children.
The St Brigid’s spokesman stressed the importance of a facility like this for the area.
“People don’t realise the discipline amateur boxing training can give young people,” he said.
“It gives them the chance to keep fit, learn sportsmanship and self-discipline, and benefit from the support of a mentor in their boxing coach.
“It can also offer positive roles, positive routes into training for people, education and employment.”
The spokesman said boxing also gives young people status and an opportunity to make something of their lives.
“This is a sport that has an image of attracting young people and long before the Celtic Tiger, boxing clubs have been quietly building communities,” he added.
The coaching team at St Brigid’s includes Gerry McDaid (head coach), John Domican and Jason Tang.
Meanwhile, St Brigid’s Amateur Boxing Club is open to any boy or girl, aged 10 or over that would like to join the club. Please contact Jason on 085-7357661 or Gerry on 087-1362643.
