 A DUBLIN 15 neighbourhood is being tarred with a reputation for anarchy and hooliganism thanks to a frightening three-minute video posted on YouTube.The video, which has been viewed by almost 3,000 people, is the first clip to appear when ‘Mulhuddart’ is typed into the popular website’s search engine. Viewers are treated to a number of dangerous boy-racer stunts, many of which are filmed in housing estates and on public roads in the Mulhuddart area. Footage of high-speed handbrake turns is captured on camera phones while groups of youths egg on the mindless drivers from the sideline. In one scene, a silver Ford Mondeo races down a public road in the rain before pulling a handbrake turn directly in front of his amateur cameraman. Shockingly, a Nissan Micra attempts similar stunts in the middle of a housing estate. Another scene shows makeshift stock car racing where vehicles hammer into one another in front of a delighted crowd of onlookers. The video is undoubtedly aimed at car enthusiasts, some of whom even leave messages of encouragement and congratulations on the site such as “savage video, lads” and “lethal video, lads”. Local councillor Paul Donnelly (SF) described the video as “incredibly disturbing”. “It’s absolutely atrocious to see such things going on in estates and on public roads,” he told Northside People. “I think above all it encourages other youths to film similar stunts in their estates and for a competition to develop on YouTube to find out which is the so-called ‘maddest’ area. “I think some of the roads seem to be around the Drumheath and Ladyswell areas. “Not one of the youths seems to have considered the dangers involved - I mean, some of those cars could easily have spun into the person filming the stunt.” He added: “You’d wonder what will be next when these car stunts are seen as tame. It’s incredibly worrying that such images are accessible to such a wide audience.” The video compilation also captured vicious bare fistfights between teenage boys in the middle of a housing estate. A number of youths are seen laughing and cheering on the fight. “I found that most sickening,” Cllr Donnelly said. “I don’t know whether it was a staged fight or whether they were serious; either way the two boys were really going for it. “You’d have to ask some serious questions about YouTube’s policy and how such behaviour is allowed to be posted.” Cllr Paul Donnelly works on a school completion programme on the Northside and believes that joyriding in the Dublin 15 area has “dropped off” in recent months. “It goes in peaks and troughs,” he said. YouTube has a security measure in place to ensure that viewers of the video are over 18 years of age. As per YouTube’s terms and conditions, videos which are flagged as inappropriate are reviewed to determine if they violate the site’s terms of use. Those attempting to post a video are asked not to post videos “showing bad stuff like animal abuse, drug abuse, or bomb making” and that “graphic or gratuitous violence is not allowed”. “If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated, don't post it,” the website states. “YouTube is not a shock site. Don't post gross-out videos of accidents, dead bodies and similar things.”
