Residents across a number of Southside suburbs say they are effectively being held hostage in their own homes, as more and more commuters park on residential roads. Henry Upton, a Labour Party candidate, has criticised the fact that residents of many estates in the Crumlin, Kimmage and Terenure areas are “living in virtual car parks” as commuters park outside their homes. Mr Upton claimed that many commuters drive into suburbs on the Southside, park their cars on the roads and then take buses to work in the city. He has called on Dublin City Council to provide extra park and ride facilities, shuttle buses and encourage car-pooling among residents to alleviate the situation. “This is happening everywhere around Crumlin, Kimmage and Terenure,” he said. “There is Rathdown Estate in Bushy Park in Terenure for example. If an ambulance was called there is a fear that it may not succeed in making it to the back of the estate. “I feel the city and county council planners need to urgently address this issue and provide sufficient secure park and ride facilities adjacent to the Quality Bus Corridors. “Traffic in these areas is back to its usual gridlock, morning and evening,” he added. “Commuters have shown they are willing to use public transport even with no facilities for parking. “To encourage greater use of public transport a much wider range of facilities must be provided including feeder or shuttle buses and a network of carpooling in estates where many residents travel to and from the city centre every day.” Mr Upton received a letter from a constituent in the Crumlin/Kimmage area who claimed “illegal” parking outside her home was making her life unbearable and that she was considering selling her house as a result. “The traffic chaos and car parking is an increasing issue for me,” the letter reads. “I do not own a car but I have a driveway, which is regularly blocked by motorists, either residents in the area or visitors, who park their cars indiscriminately. “Last Thursday, a mother blocked my driveway while dropping her child at the local school. This, in addition to the parking of delivery vans in front of my entrance, has forced me to consider selling my house. “Living here in this area with constant irregular and sometimes illegal parking is making my life unbearable at times.” A spokesperson for the city council’s Parking Enforcement Department said: “The first thing that has to be done is that the residents must write in and state that they have a problem. They have to say they want a pay and display residential parking permit scheme to be put in place. “Then an engineer goes out and surveys the area and a ballot is put to local residents. If the majority want the permit system to be put in place it will go ahead.” The spokesman added that it was illegal to park in front of someone’s driveway and that residents would be fully within their rights to call a clamping company to clamp any offending vehicle. |
