hosts.jpgCOOLMINE Rugby Club’s over 35 veterans’ team kicked off the new season by hosting touring Austrian side Vienna Celtic last Friday week at Ashbrook.
The Wildebeests have faced teams from all over the rugby globe but this was their first time coming up against Austrian opposition.
Vienna Celtic is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a Veterans’ reunion tour of Ireland. The Austrian club comprises about 50 per cent of ex-pats with the remainder of their players being local. The oldest club in their country, they previously toured Ireland in the mid 90s.
The game itself was a close affair consisting of three 20 minute thirds. Vienna were first to score after 15 minutes of play.
Coolmine responded with five minutes of sustained pressure but failed to go into the interval with any points.
However, soon after the break outhalf Mick McDonagh scored a fine individual try to put the home side 7-5 ahead.
Another try left Vienna leading going into the second break by three points.
The final third remained close but it was Vienna who finished the game off, touching down in the corner with the final play of the game.
The Wildebeests will hope to build on what was a good opening performance in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, training takes place every Tuesday at 8pm. All are welcome.
