TWO hardy locals from Dublin 15 were among the first Irish swimmers to complete a gruelling 30 kilometre swim across a Swiss lake last month.
Months of tough training paid off when John Daly and John Kenny swam the length of Lake Zurich in 11 hours, 40 minutes and 10 hours, nine minutes respectively.
Hartstown local John Daly described how he motivated himself to complete the mammoth task.
“Every swimmer had a team which followed closely behind in a boat to provide water and food when needed,” he explained.
“To make sure I stayed hydrated, I took a drink every 45 minutes.
“Mentally, I had to break the swim up into the 45 minute blocks.”
A shadow of doubt was cast over John’s ability to finish the swim when a niggling shoulder pain made the swim almost unbearable.
“I wanted to do the swim in 10 hours but the pain started around the half               way mark and it made it             impossible to achieve that time,” the electrician told Northside People.
“As the swim went on, the time became less important. I just had to focus on finishing the swim.”
The father-of-two now has his sights set firmly on the English Channel.
“It’s hard to get a slot to swim the channel,” he said.
“But I hope to do it in the coming years. Obviously, it will be very different from the lake swim as I’ll be up against the choppy, open sea but with a lot more training it can be done.”
Castleknock local John Kenny completed the swim in just over 10 hours.
“The 30 kilometres was twice as long as I’d ever swam in open water before,” he said.
“At about the four hour mark I was really struggling to keep going so I was absolutely delighted to finish it.
“The lake swim was a really wonderful experience as the water was quite still and about 28 degrees.”
Mr Kenny, swam competitively in his early teens but put it on the backburner for many years while he pursued other sports.
“I only got back into swimming seriously about six or seven years ago,” he explained.
“But I love it now and my ultimate goal now is to swim the English Channel. I’ll have to train for a good few years first.
