Coombe reveals merger plan with Tallaght Hospital PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 October 2008
THE Coombe maternity hospital has drafted proposals that could see it selling its current premises and co-locating to Tallaght Hospital, it has been revealed.
According to the Coombe’s master, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick, the plan is supported by both Tallaght and St James’s hospitals with which the Coombe shares staff and patients.
Dr Fitzpatrick revealed the hospital had serious infrastructural difficulties and that there was e45 million worth of work to be done at the Coombe to address deficits.
However, he added that the hospital would restrict this spending if the move was confirmed.
It is understood that management at the Coombe Hospital originally wanted to relocate to St James’s Hospital.
In a statement Dr Chris Fitzpatrick said: “Tallaght Hospital would be the optimum site for the move in view of the very significant population expansion in the Southwest Dublin/Mid-Leinster area.”
Despite the current economic climate, Dr Fitzpatrick expressed confidence that a relocation of the hospital could be achieved in what he described as a “value for money context”.
He said there was an urgent need to relocate and rebuild the Coombe in terms of its serious infrastructural difficulties and issues relating to patient safety.
In addition he said the hospital had indicated that it would sell its current site and achieve significant revenue efficiencies by streamlining its services and processes in conjunction with the other stakeholders at Tallaght Hospital.
The hospital came up with the new plan after making a submission to KPMG – the company contracted by the HSE to carry out an independent review of maternity services in the greater Dublin area – last year.
Dr Fitzpatrick explained that he had written to both the HSE and Department of Health and Children a number of months ago outlining the new proposal and asked for the details to be passed on to KPMG, which has now completed its review.
In welcoming the proposal, Dublin South West TD  Charlie O’Connor (FF) said Tallaght would greatly benefit from the move.
"It would make a vital difference for people who currently have to travel to the city centre,” he said.
“And we must not forget that these services in Tallaght would not only serve the local community, but would also be of benefit to people in the surrounding areas including Rathfarnham, Templeogue and Terenure, not to mention commuter towns like Kildare and Wicklow.”
