AS THE recession kicks in and Dublin North East dole queues swell with young skilled workers the Greensdale Jobsclub is hoping to stem the tide and get people back to work or onto training courses.
Following last month’s revelation in Northside People that an additional 700 people are signing on at Kilbarrack social welfare office along with 1,000 people in Coolock, the Jobsclub is hoping to work with the people directly affected and help them find work.
Set up in November 2006 by the Northside Partnership with sponsorship from FAS, the service has gone from strength to strength since its doors were opened to the public last January.
The Jobsclub provides training programmes to assist participants who are ready for work to develop skills, which they can use to find a job or suitable training course.
Jimmy Eccles from Baldoyle had worked at Chivers for over 15 years before being made redundant; he says the Jobsclub is the perfect resource for people finding themselves unexpectedly out of work.
“I had never been unemployed before in my life,” he explained to Northside People.
“I decided to go to the Jobsclub and I found it to be very informative, I met new people and got lots of much needed help.
“If you are feeling a bit down and need a boost in your self confidence then it’s definitely the place to go.”
“It was a total success for me as I got a new job, a new career direction and I’m looking at my opportunities in my workplace now.
“The best part is that you can just go back at any time to update yourself, get a new CV made or get interview advice.”
This active, practical and participative process takes place under the guidance and supervision of the Jobsclub staff, Trina O’Connor and Maeve Hardy.
The programme is based at Contact Point LES in Greendale Shopping Centre, between Social Welfare offices and the shops and is a walk-in appointment-based service where clients can drop in and make appointments.
New clients are given a one-to-one session with the staff, which provides an opportunity for them to work out a plan for their job search.
CV’s are redesigned and amended with the support of the team and people are encouraged and supported by staff in their search for employment.
The centre fully supports clients in applying for and securing suitable employment regardless of their level of education.
Skills and services provided include; job seeking tuition, assertiveness and confidence building, interview preparation techniques, mock interviews, CV preparation and cover letters.
The programme also aims to provide career focus, a systematic approach to job seeking and group support.
