CONSUMING passions are one thing but 10 consecutive nights of Neil Diamond concerts and a bursting collection of Neil Diamond memorabilia is another. But Northsider Ambrose O’Shea (57), maintains that his obsession for Neil Diamond is just a “healthy hobby”. “I first saw Neil on the Johnny Cash show in 1970 and I’ve been a fan ever since,” the Cabra man explained. “I think he’s just amazing and an absolutely fantastic performer.” Ambrose owns one of the biggest Neil Diamond collections in the country and his ultimate ambition is to be introduced on stage by the man himself as his “best Irish fan”. The retired Dublin Port worker has created a Myspace site completely dedicated to the American singer-songwriter, which has attracted almost 2,700 members. “I’ve got every album, CD and every record Neil ever produced,” Ambrose told Northside People. “I’ve met Neil and other band members a number of times and have the pictures to prove it.” Ambrose’s most prized and valuable possession is his 2008 Neil Diamond tour book which is signed by each of the band members. “I don’t know if there is another one of these anywhere else in the world,” he explained. “It’s very rare to get one that all of the members have signed and I was really honoured that they sent it over especially for me. It will be worth a lot of money in years to come.” The tour book will be on display at the Regency Hotel in the coming months as the hotel is holding a series of Neil Diamond tribute shows over the Christmas season. “I really respect all Neil Diamond tribute singers and I try to help them as much as possible,” he said. “I try to see and promote their shows as much as possible.” Ambrose has been to countless Neil Diamond shows in Europe and America. “He played 10 nights in the RDS in 1989 and I went to all the shows,” he said. “I also went to the six shows in the Point Depot in 1999. “At the time it cost a fortune to go to all the shows but it was worth it. “It usually opens with four shows so you buy the tickets thinking the first and last concerts are bound to be really special, but then you think what if something happens in the shows in between? “Before you know it you are getting tickets for ten shows in a row.” He concluded: “I guess you could say that I’m a hardcore fan.” For further information or to view Ambrose’s extensive collection of memorabilia visit http://www.myspace.com/ diamondville102. |
