kyron.jpgI think of my three year-old grandson, who lives in Denmark, a lot. When we look at cartoons like Godzilla together he tells me not to be scared.
And I thought of Oscar last week when I was handed the keys to mark two of the massive Ssangyong Kyron II.
Ssangyong has a reputation for building huge SUVs like the Kyron, Rexton, Actyon and Rodius and sometimes you might be a little intimidated at the size of the SUV as you sit behind the wheel.
But thinking of Oscar I wasn't as I climbed aboard the latest version of the Kyron from the Korean manufacturers.
This is a massive, yet neat, five-seater, which can be reduced to three or two seats, depending on the amount of items you want to transport.
Naturally there are changes from the first model and they include improvements to the front headlamps and the tailgate glass.
My test model was black, which of course looked very well. Although I seem to remember the first version of the Kyron was a lovely shade of blue.
It truly is a massive jeep, so why then do Ssangyong insist on fitting such a small fidgety radio? They should go down the same road as Kia, who had similar radios, and give us decent sized knobs for the controls.
Elsewhere on the dash the controls are well laid out with plenty of slave controls on the steering wheel. The only slight complaint is that the handbrake is nearer to the front seat passenger than the driver.
If you are troubled by arthritis you may need a small step-ladder to climb on board. But once inside you really appreciate the views from the cabin.
Driving on our improving Irish roads network can be enjoyable, but also boring. If you really want to appreciate the views from an SUV like the Kyron then head for the country byroads.
There is ample room for five adults and this SUV handles really well. With five seats in use the boot is still massive. And there is discreet extra storage space in the boot for small items.
In 2006 the Kyron was voted Soft-Roader of the Year by 4x4 magazine in England. But there is nothing soft about it and it can handle the toughest terrain. The steering was very light and it certainly wasn't heavy on diesel.
Prices for the 2.0 diesel passenger models start at e34,995 for the two-wheel drive, while the four-wheel drive is e39,995. The 2.0 automatic version with leather seats costs e44,495, while the commercial models start at e25,000.
The new diesel engines are supposed to be cleaner than the old model, but the bad news is that all passenger models are still high on C02 emissions and come in at Band F for road tax, which is a massive e1,000 per annum.
Ssangyong now has a strong presence in Ireland with 30 dealers in 20 counties.
