ryan.jpgA NORTHSIDE man with a serious heart condition has lashed out at his local authority for providing what he says is entirely inadequate housing.
John Ryan has been living at Priory Hall, Donaghmede, since December last year in rented Dublin City Council accommodation. He claims that the property has been affected by major leaks.
Having had heart surgery twice in the last year, Mr Ryan believes the constant damp in the property is causing further damage to his health.
“Every time it rains the water manages to get in,” he said. “It’s completely ruining the place and has been going on for almost a year at this stage.
“I have had two heart operations in the last four years and the conditions I live in are going to cause serious damage to my health.”
He added: “There is a very bad leak coming from outside but I just don’t know where it’s coming from. The builders have been around to fix it loads of times but nothing seems to work at all.”
Mr Ryan now wants the council to move him to more suitable accommodation.
“I think there have been close to 18 attempts to fix this mystery leak but if it’s not sorted soon I don’t think I can go on living here,” he added.
“My son can’t visit me until this whole situation is sorted. I have to sleep on the couch because there is so much damp in my bedroom.”
He revealed that the leaks are so bad that everything in the room is entirely ruined from damp and will need to be replaced.

“I have had serious heart surgery and now I am forced to live in this damp which is causing me constant chest infections. I want out,” he stated.
“It seems to me that the council just don’t care about what conditions I am forced to live in here.”
A spokesperson for the firm currently in charge of the buildings stated that they are working to solve the problems at Priory Hall.
“We would like to confirm that all problems relating to water ingress at the named apartment are currently being addressed by the main contractor/sub-contractor/suppliers,” the company told Northside People.
“We anticipate an expedient resolution to this problem.”
Dublin City Council has also confirmed that they are aware of the situation at Priory Hall. While stressing that they are not currently in charge of the property, they say they will endeavor to resolve the issue in the coming weeks.
Cllr Sean Kenny (Lab) has called on the developers to take immediate action to deal with ongoing flooding and maintenance problems at Priory Hall.
“It’s not just the current heavy rains that is the issue; some of the other problems in Priory Hall have been going on for past nine months,” he claimed.
“Dublin City Council has been pursuing the developer to finish the snagging. Residents have told me they are sick of it.”
Cllr Kenny submitted a report to Dublin City Council asking for an urgent report outlining the work that needs to be undertaken.
“The only outstanding issue to be resolved is the balconies,” a reply from the council stated. “The [company] has made several attempts to resolve these leaks to date.
“At present, arrangements are being made for our senior engineer to meet on site with the senior engineer from the company and resolve this issue once and for all. This will take place within the next two weeks.”
