THE future of Raheny’s annual panto is in serious doubt as the local drama group have lost their only rehearsal space and are now desperately hoping to find a new venue.Pat Sullivan, a member of the local drama and variety group, which puts on a panto each year at the parish youth club, was gutted to learn that the group was to be left homeless. “We have been putting on plays in this church since the 1980s and we always start our rehearsals in September – you can imagine our shock to turn up and find the locks had been changed,” she explained. “The building is lying empty now and nobody can get in. We think the church are planning to sell it and we can’t use it in the meantime, apparently. “Now it really looks like there will be no panto this year as we have no other place to rehearse in the area and such short time to find somewhere else. “I had to tell the children that the panto will not be going ahead if we can’t use the rehearsal space,” she added. “They were very sad.” Every year the Raheny based group competes with others in Baldoyle and Killester to see who can put on the best performance. “We always call each other up to confirm what panto is going to be on in which area as we couldn’t have two groups clashing,” Ms Sullivan said. “It’s a shame that this year our group of over 60 people could easily be left out of the fun. “I don’t think it’s too late just yet, though. I think the problems with the hall could be fixed. As long as we get started by October there is just enough time. “I will break my back to get the work done if necessary - the show must go on.” The hall was also used by the Gotta Dance group of dancers and was the venue for a local market at weekends. Parish priest Father O Shea told Northside People that the pastoral council was forced to make the unfortunate decision to close the hall. “It was a very old building and it needs complete refurbishing,” he explained. “It just isn’t suitable for bringing large groups of people into it in its current state and we are still deciding if it is to be sold or done up. “The whole thing is very regrettable but it’s also necessary as the correct facilities just aren’t in the building.” Father O Shea said he had been to a number of pantos put on in the local area and had thoroughly enjoyed them all. “They are excellent people and put on a great show,” he said. “I really hope they can find a new venue to rehearse. “As for the future of the building, it’s under discussion and we are undecided. People will have to wait for a final decision.”
